After SA9 the SA area carries on under other post towns, Neath, Port Talbot and Llanelli among them. Cambrian Leak Detection covers those districts as well, and they are listed with the rest of the covered towns across the SA area.

Why does the age of Swansea's housing matter when a pipe leaks?

The age of Swansea's housing matters because Welsh Water names the age of the pipe as a cause of leaks, and the Swansea council area has the highest share of pre-1919 dwellings of the five places with pages on this site: 26.4%.

That share is the Valuation Office Agency's count at 31 March 2026: 30,830 of the council area's 116,740 dwellings. Welsh Water lists a pipe's age beside a weakness in the pipe, leaking fittings or joints, and movement in the ground as the ways a leak can start.

Homes in the Swansea council area, 2021
In 2021, Swansea council area households lived 25.4% in terraced houses, 34.5% in semi-detached houses, 24.0% in detached houses and 12.6% in purpose-built flats; 62.3% owned their home.

Older homes can also hold older kinds of pipe. Welsh Water says lead was widely used for water pipes up to the 1970s and can still be found in properties built before 1970 that have not been fully modernised, and it offers a free water test from the cold kitchen tap. That statement covers every home Welsh Water supplies; it says nothing about any one Swansea street.

Whatever their age, the hot and cold pipes of a Swansea terrace run out of sight under floors, inside walls and above ceilings, and tracing hidden leaks on old water pipes there is done without breaking into a wall or floor first.

How does water travel from Llyn Brianne to Swansea taps?

Water reaches Swansea taps from Llyn Brianne: it is released into the River Tywi, taken out forty miles downstream at the Nantgaredig intake, pumped 17 miles to Lower Lliw Reservoir and then one mile more to the head of the Felindre treatment works.

That route is the one Coflein sets down in its 2011 record of the Nantgaredig intake works. The Drinking Water Inspectorate files Welsh Water's Swansea and Morriston supply zone under the Tywi supply system, with sampling at the Felindre and Bryngwyn treatment works.

Along that whole chain the water is Welsh Water's to look after as far as the boundary of the street outside. The length from there to the internal stop tap, the tap inside the home that usually sits under the kitchen sink, belongs to the Swansea owner, and so does every pipe beyond it.

Which leaks can be found in a Swansea house or business?

Leaks in a Swansea house or business can be found on the water pipes inside, the central heating circuit and the underground supply pipe, and a trace and access search can be carried out for an insurance claim.

Cambrian Leak Detection works for small businesses as well as homes, and the four investigations are the same for both.

Hidden pipe leaks in older Swansea homes

Whether the damp is in a Swansea shop or a terraced house, a hidden pipe leak is traced from the stain back to the joint or fitting letting the water out.

Central heating leak tracing

If a Swansea home or shop needs its boiler topped up once a month or more, or the gauge keeps falling below 1 bar, the search starts on the sealed heating circuit.

Private supply pipe leaks in Swansea

Lush vegetation, damp patches on the ground and a big drop in water pressure are among the signs Welsh Water lists for a private supply pipe that may be leaking.

Trace and access leak detection

A policy's trace and access cover pays for locating a hidden leak's source and reaching it, and the search's findings go to the insurer.

Does Welsh Water repair a supply pipe leak in Swansea?

Sometimes: the supply pipe is the owner's, but Welsh Water says it “will offer a free repair where possible”, will try to pinpoint a household leak if its conditions are met, and runs a Leak Support Scheme for owner-occupiers.

Welsh Water's own name for a leak on the owner's side is a private leak, and its Private leaks page sets out that help in full. Its code of practice describes the free repair as an offer it may make, subject to certain conditions.

The Leak Support Scheme can include a financial contribution towards a repair. Welsh Water keeps it for customers who own the home they live in, so a Swansea landlord or business cannot use it.

On the owner's length of pipe, Cambrian Leak Detection finds where the water is getting out, and its page on underground supply pipe leaks explains how. The home page sets out its leak detection for the whole of Wales.

Water escaping in the road outside, before it reaches the owner's pipe, goes straight to the company: tell Welsh Water through its Report an issue service.
