Porthcawl, Maesteg and Pontyclun are near neighbours, each a post town in its own right on the list of covered towns across south Wales.

What did the Pontycymer case show about shared supply pipes?

The Pontycymer case showed how a leak on a shared supply pipe falls on every house it serves: BBC News reported on 20 July 2026, through the Local Democracy Reporting Service, that residents of five houses in Pontycymer, in the Garw Valley in Bridgend county, said Welsh Water had told them a leak on the shared pipe supplying their homes was theirs to repair.

A Welsh Water spokesperson said the company does not own or manage the pipe, so it is the property owners' responsibility. Welsh Water also told the BBC it had offered the residents a free connection to its main if each property connected individually, and a contribution towards the cost of the work to run a pipe from the properties to the main.

Residents told the BBC that their insurers would not pay without evidence of where the leak was. That is the gap a located leak fills, and it is what trace and access evidence for an insurer sets down for a Bridgend owner.

Which water system serves Bridgend?

Bridgend is served from Welsh Water's Southwest Wales region, whose southern part runs on what Welsh Water calls complex and highly conjunctive systems serving Pembrokeshire, Carmarthenshire, Swansea and Bridgend.

Welsh Water's code adds a general point about distance: a property some way from the main is likely to be served by a very long supply pipe, the responsibility for which may be shared with neighbouring properties. That pipe begins where Welsh Water's part ends, which is normally the edge of the street that holds the main.

What kinds of leak are traced in Bridgend?

The kinds of leak traced in Bridgend are water pipe leaks indoors, heating leaks in the sealed circuit and supply pipe leaks underground, shared pipes included, plus trace and access searches for insurance claims.

Finding a leak and repairing it are separate jobs: the search fixes where the water is escaping, and the repair follows from that.

Hidden pipe leak detection

Across Bridgend's semis and terraces, moisture mapping reads a wetted wall, floor or ceiling point by point and shows how far the damp has spread and where it is wettest.

Heating system leak detection

A Bridgend boiler topped up once or twice a year is, in Ideal's view, generally nothing to worry about, but one that needs its pressure restored at least monthly may have a small leak.

A shared supply pipe leak

Where one pipe feeds several Bridgend houses, a ground microphone listens along it for water escaping under pressure, and tracer gas finds leaks that make no sound.

Trace and access searches for Bridgend claims

A Bridgend owner claiming for hidden water damage should speak to the insurer first: Ageas, for one, needs to have agreed the work before it starts.

Can Bridgend homeowners use Welsh Water's Leak Support Scheme?

Yes, if they own and live in the house: Welsh Water's Leak Support Scheme is only for customers who own and occupy their property, and it is not available for homes rented to someone else or for businesses.

That rule reaches more households in Bridgend than in the other places with pages on this site. Census 2021 found 70.5% of households in the Bridgend council area owning their home, the highest share among the five.

Welsh Water pays once it has confirmed that the leak is repaired and the supply is leak free. The payment is one-off per supply pipe, and receipts and invoices are needed as proof of payment.

A Bridgend landlord cannot use the scheme: Welsh Water says landlords and businesses arrange the repair themselves and then tell it the work is done.

Owners and landlords alike need the leak located before that repair, and finding it is the job Cambrian Leak Detection does across its leak detection in Wales.
